National Biology Olympiad of Armenia

Official Letter of the Ministry of Education and Science is delivering to the teachers, students, schools via school principals..


The main organizer is the Ministry of Education and Science

 

9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade students of secondary schools of the Republic of Armenia are involved.


There are 4 rounds: school, regional (marz), republican and final. Students of 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades are eligible to participate in competitions. Separate questions are proposed for each grade and round.   

1st round is in February; 2nd round-in March; 3rd round- in March; 4th round- in April   

Winners of regional round (usually about 100 students) participate in the republican round. Every year the republican round take place in the high school N 118 after A. Yerznkyan in the Yerevan city (the  capital of the Republic). Since 2009 the republican round includes 2 parts: theoretical and practical. It takes 2 days. Winners of the republican round participate in the final 4th  round. The purpose of the 4th round  ( mainly theory) is to choose 4  students to participate in the IBO. 


1st round task includes tests with multiple choice, matching, problem solving (only theory); 2nd round- tests with multiple choice, matching, problem solving (only theory);  3th round - the republican round -includes 2 parts: theoretical and practical. Theory part includes multiple true/false type questions. The  practical part includes 4 practical tasks ( For example: Plant Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). The winners of  the 3th round participate in the final 4th round.

National Testing Committee for NBO is  appointed by Ministry of Education and Science.  This Committee  composes the tests.
In all the rounds students take the tests at schools, which are selected by Ministry of Education & Science and Local Governments. 


Prior the first thee rounds there is not additional training for students. Students training for IBO takes 2 weeks (9-12 hour per week).  IBO National coordinator  is responsible for this training. 


Following materials are available for students helping them to score better in the National rounds or to prepare for the IBO

-  High school textbooks

-  Tests (former NBO tests are available at website  www.armedu.am )

-  Special biology literature

 


The winners of each round of NBO are awarded with Diplomas of three categories (first, second, third diplomas for 9th, 10th, 11th grade students, separately) and certificates.

Local/national TV and press are not very active concerning coverage of NBO and IBO. All information about NBO and IBO are available in the website of the Ministry of Education and Science. Information about NBO and IBO also can be find in the newspaper “Krtutyun” (“Education”)


The Ministry of Education and Science organizes and pays for NBO and IBO.  The high school N 118 after A. Yerznkyan helps to organize NBO final round. Yerevan State University supports to train students before IBO.


Ministry of Education and Science is  the main organizer and sponsor of NBO in Armenia.


The Ministry of Education and Science has instruction for the organization of all Armenian National Olympiad rounds.


About 50000 students are eligible to participate in national competitions each year.   About 7300 students  participated in the year 2018 (about 15% of them) in the first round of NBO.  According to the charter 100 students will participate in republican round.
