Teachers and students know about the competition by the information given by the Ministry of Education directly to schools

There are three main rounds, but sometimes also four, in schools students are selected acording to their results in a first round, then they compete in a municipal countest (usually in january), and about the ten best students are selected to assist to the provincial countest (Cuba has 14 provinces and a special municipe), then, the top three are selected to compete in the national countest (march). All the students from high school and preuniversity are encourage to participate.

Until the national, the type of test is mainly of mutliple choice and explanation, with interpreting question, in national, practical exercises and criticism are included. The test are supervised by schoolteachers and regional methodologists.
