International Biology Olympiad – Hong Kong Contest (IBO-HKC)

Information about the competition is posted on the official website of the IBO-HKC.  The IBO-HKC is promoted through school circular issued annually by the Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China to all local secondary schools.  All secondary schools are invited to nominate students to participate in the IBO-HKC.  Apart from school nomination, interested students are also welcome to participate in the competition through self-nomination.

 


The IBO-HKC is co-organised by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE).  A steering committee is formed comprising officers of the Education Bureau of the HKSAR, staff of the HKAGE, academics and teachers from universities and secondary schools for providing professional advice related to the IBO-HKC.  The IBO-HKC is made up of 3 rounds of selection test.

 


The first selection test

50 multiple choice questions are provided.

-  Around 80 students are selected from this test.

-  Selected students are invited to attend Phase I training and the second selection test.

 

The second selection test

-  200 true or false questions deriving from 50 complex questions are provided.

-  Around 15 students are selected from this test.

-  Selected students are invited to attend Phase II training and the third selection test.

 

The third selection test

-  Practical tests are provided.

-  4 students are selected to represent Hong Kong, China in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) held in the same year.

-  The 4 selected students are invited to attend Phase III training.

-  2 additional students are also selected to enter Phase III training as reserve contestants.

 


Phase I

8 sessions are provided for around 80 students selected according to the scores in the first selection test.

(Remarks: After the Phase I student training, all participating students (around 80 students) are invited to attend the second selection test.)

 

Phase II

8 sessions with training on practical skills are provided for the top 15 students in the second selection test.

(Remarks: After the Phase II student training, all participating students (around 15 students) are invited to attend the third selection test.)

 

Phase III

6 sessions with training on practical skills are provided for the top 6 students in the third selection test.

-  Past IBO papers are made available to the team members.

 


Gold, Silver and Bronze award certificates are awarded on the basis of results in the first selection test.

 



The competition is fully funded by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR.
