National Biology Olympiad

Republican Scientific and Practical Center "Daryn" sends invitation to all education departments of regions of Kazakhstan to call high school students to participate in olympiads.ceeds as follows: city, regional (state) and then republican (national).  The teachers and students are informed at the beginning of academic year (early September). 


The olympiads proceeds as follows: city, regional (state) and then republican (national). The first round (city) of biology olympiad starts in November where the total number of participants is roundly 1000. "Daryn" distributes exam questions to regional education departments. The same strategy is used for the second round (regional). The regional olympiad is usually organized in January where the number of participants reaches 500. The third round (National) is organized in March and the place of organization varies every year, where the total number of participants reaches 120. The winners (gold and silver) of National Biology olympiad are then invited to final stage, where four best students are selected for international biology olympiad. "Daryn" is funded by Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan. All schools and students are welcome to participate in the first round. 


The tests are produced by Senior Researchers of Nazarbayev University. The first and second round test questions are composed of 2 sets. The first set questions are multiple choice and the second set questions are essay type questions. The third, National round of olympiad is composed of two rounds, the first theoretical (true/false, IBO type) and second practical (laboratory tasks). The final round is composed of theoretical (multiple choice, essay type) questions and practical tasks. All rounds of olympiad take place at local universities. 


The winners of National Biology Olympiad are selected for training camps. The camps are usually held at Nazarbayev Univeristy for two weeks each. The winners of the final stage are sent to Korea or Turkey for additional training prior the international biology olympiad for about 10 days. The students are always provided with all tests from previous regional and national olympiads.


All required materials for all rounds of biology olympiad are organized according to IBO syllabus. Students usually study university textbooks. Most often they purchase books from Russia or from the US. There are several types of specialized test banks with biology test question. 


The winners of National Biology Olympiad are awarded with corresponding medals and certificates. Moreover, the winners are provided with educational grants for all national universities. 


The olympiad schedule is announced by "Daryn" throughout the year. The winners of International Biology Olympiad are invited to Minister of Education of Kazakhstan and awarded with prizes. Local and national media are always involved in it. Most of the time the winners' photos are published in local newspapers. 


All rounds of biology olympiad is funded by the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan. NO other sponsors are involved in it 


Republican Scientific and Practical Center "Daryn" is funded and controlled by the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan. 


The general rules are very similar to IBO's regulations. 


Different kinds of schools participate in National Olympiad. Most of the winners are from Kazakh-Turkish High Schools. On average, 40% of all participants are awarded with medals. Starting from 2002 until now, around 60% of the winners are from Kazakhs-Turkish High Schools. The rest of the winners are from the other schools.
