Mongolian Biology Olympiad

Mongolian Biology Olympiad (MBO) is open to all secondary schools within Mongolia. Three round exams are held in December, March and May respectively every year. It will be announced by the website of MBO and official documents will be issued to every senior high school approved by Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture of Mongolia. 


National University of Mongolia organizes the National Biology Olympiad with its co-sponsor Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture of Mongolia.

First round: School round (competition among the school students of 9th and 12th grade) exam is conducted nationally at the end of December. The tests are prepared by their Biology teacher in the school. This round is open to all students who wants to test their knowledge for Biology.

Second round: City and province round (competition among the winners of school round students of 9th and 12th grade) exam is conducted at the end of March. The tests are prepared by the Mongolian Biology Olympiad committee. About 500 students participate in city and province round. The exam is 90 minutes long, consisting of multiple-choice answer. Certificates are given to winners.    

Third round: National finals (competition among the winners of city and province round students of 12th grade) exam is conducted at the end of April or early May. The tests are prepared by the Mongolian Biology Olympiad committee and correspond to the tests of IBO. The National Finals consists of theoretical and practical examsAbout 30 students participate in National round. The theoretical exam is 100 minutes long, consisting of multiple-choice answer. The practical exam take 200 minutes for four subjects.   

Third round is carried out at the National University of Mongolia in the capital city of Mongolia

Fourth roundThe top four medal winners from the National Biology Olympiad are invited to represent the Mongolian team at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).


Mongolian Biology Olympiad Committee: categorized into seven groups of 25 professors in total, according to content of questions: 

A) Animal anatomy and physiology 

B) Plant anatomy, morphology, and physiology 

C) Molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry 

D) Genetics, evolution 

E) Ecology 

F) Ethology 

G) Systematics

The theoretical exam consists of multiple-choices answer. The practical exam consists four subjects which correspond to the practice of IBO.   


The National finals consists two weeks of intensive theoretical and practical tutorials, where the students work with leading biologists from across the Mongolia.

Certificates are awarded to all participants. Each student receives a sponsor gift. 


The MBO are well exposed on both nation-wide media.

Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture of Mongolia is the main funding body of the Mongolian Biology Olympiad.


In 2003, Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture of Mongolia is issued the Rules describe all aspects of conducting of all rounds of all Olympiads (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Geography etc.). These rules strictly prescribe the number of winners who can be delegated to the next round of the Olympiad. 

In general, Mongolia follows the IBO rules and regulations to select participants for the IBO.
