Letters are sent to all the schools with Advanced  Level classes through the help of Ministry of Education. Also details are sent to some International Schools in the country. Teachers and students are informed by personal contacts. 


Application and details were published in Local newpapers, especially in a science weekly newspaper (Vidusara)


Sri Lankan Biology Olympiad is organzied by Institute of Biology, Sri Lanka. Competition is based on two hour paper conducted usually in end of June in  8 universities around the  country: Colombo, Sri Jayewardeneprua, Kelaniya, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Jaffna, Eastern and Vaunia campus. 

Four students are selected to participate at the International Biology Olympiad, after the Second Round examination of the Sri Lanka Biology Olympiad, which would be conducted for the eligible gold medalists.

Examination is conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages. 


Test consists of two hour paper: 40 Multiple choice questions and 20 short answer questions


Students are not trained for local competition. But model papers and the format are informed to students. Selected students for International Olympiad are  given a training, especially practical training for 14 days at Universities of Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo and Kelaniya.


The examination is mainly based on G.C.E. Advanced Level Biology curriculum and may also include questions on the current developments and the applications of Biology. Students can use text books published for local A/L examination.

However selected students are encouraged to read standard Biology textbooks such as Campbell.

Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be selected based on the results of the examination paper. These  medals will be awarded at IOB sessions in September  in Colombo.  They will also be felicitated with other National Olympiad winners (such as Physics, Mathematics Olympiad) at World Science Day Ceremony, organized by National Science Foundation.

Those who score more than 50% of the marks are awarded a merit certificate from IOB. All results are published in IOB website (www.iobsl.org). 


Competition is published in news papers and radios. National TV, newspaper and radio coverage is given for International Olympiad winners.  

 


Candidates have to pay an examination fee. For some years, registration fees for participation to IOB is given by government. Sponsorship from Private sector is obtained for air tickets.


Ministry of Education officially informed the schools on the competition. Medal winners are felicitated by the Ministry.


Students who are sitting for Local or London A/L exams in a particular year are eligible to apply.
